Ironie des Schicksals:

There are no translations available.

Good News from TED: Der Happy Planet Index

Just on the very first day of TED an elated Nic Marks of the New Economic Foundation inspires the crowd. He begins his presentation with a wonderful quote from Robert Kennedy's presidential candidature speech in 1968!!:

So if every night the well adored stock market indexes and gross national products on TV say so little about the actual prosperity of our nations, what are we to pay attention to instead? To the Happy Planet Index. It indicates where the happiest people live with the lowest consumption of resources in the world, and it uses these two aspects in relation. Leading the HPI: Costa Rica! And it is not the only Latin American country that ranks a top position in this index. Maybe we should focus more on Brazil and Costa Rica than on the amazing rise of India and China. On the website of the Happy Planet Index, you can explore the index playfully and track the development over decades.

Good News from TED: Eat Insects!

Took some time off this week to attend the TED-Global Conference in Oxford. 4 days - 60 lectures. Lots of exciting ideas and inspiration around the slogan ,And now the good news‘. A whole series of lectures dealing with the issue of sustainability, of which I will report in the coming days.

My freshest impression is just a few minutes old: A report by Marcel Dicke from the Netherlands who gives us a lot of good arguments why we should switch to an insect diet in the future, so that all people in the world can ingest animal proteins and protect the environment at the same time. One good reason: out of 10 kilos of forage we get 1 kilo of Pork, 3 kilos of beef, 5 kilos of poultry - but 9 pounds of locusts. Yummie! Dicke praises the grasshopper as "the shrimp of the land", and during the lunch break half the buffet is filled with insect delicacies. And the TEDsters snatch enthusiastically. As a sweet tooth I have overcome my first disgust and feasted on the insect-cookies (see photo). How many worms and insects were on them? No clue! But very crispy and tasty! More at www.bugs2eat.

Solar city Munich

"The Sun Rocks" is the motto under which the Gehrlicher AG starts a solar initiative for Munich. As a sponsor of the Tollwood summer festival, Gehrlicher supports the music arena, and searches actively for potential roofs and open spaces for new photovoltaic plants in the Munich area (www.diesonnerockt.de).
An interactive overview of the potential of each rooftop in Munich can be found here.

Telekom‘s grand entrance

With double-sided advertisements in national newspapers, Telekom published the Utopia Changemaker Manifesto, which they have signed on April 22, 2010. A powerful serve, and also a brave step! In doing so, they have raised the claim they had set to themselves in the first place: ten sustainable goals, backed by specific measures, which are all documented on Utopia. They can be found at www.utopia.de and are open to questions, criticism and suggestions.

That deserves great respect and makes a mark. We are looking forward to many more companies to follow. A list of all Utopia changemaker companies can be found at www.utopia.de/changemaker.

Obermann a Utopian?

This Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30, Rene Obermann is going to deliver himself to the Utopia live chat.

We all take (small) steps to make the world a little better every day. On Thursday, however, a big one is going to take a big step when the CEO of Deutsche Telekom, Rene Obermann, as the first chairman of a DAX corporation ever puts himself to the questions of the Utopians - such as: what responsibilities do companies have towards environmental groups and the society? Can they ever be sustainable?

The ADAC is on AC / DC!

Some c-celebrities are even being invited to the mere opening of a can of tuna. I at least have now made it to the opening of the first charging station of ADAC in Munich. As the first customer, I drove up with my Roadster at this electricity filling pump and aroused great interest on the part of the press. Print, Radio, TV - everyone was there to report on the inauguration of the high voltage outlet. For hours, I was allowed to talk about my experiences as an electric driver. All this effort to push the electric revolution. I could also indulge us a bit of product placement by patching the URL of our book GruenSchlauSexy.com on the back. (Of course, only after my friends at Tesla had polished the ride to a shine.)
